Why Money Coaching?

Knowledge can tell us what to do. It doesn't always change what we do.

People can understand investing, saving or financial planning and still hesitate, avoid, overthink or repeat familiar patterns. Money is not only numbers. Our relationship with it is shaped by experiences, beliefs, emotions, behaviours and meanings that may operate beneath the surface.

“Money Coaching is the missing layer between knowing about money and how we behave with it.”

The CMC® methodology focuses on the human relationship with money — rather than recommending financial products, investments or financial strategies.

01

Understand the pattern

Explore the experiences, beliefs, emotions and behaviours that influence how a person earns, spends, saves, invests, gives, receives and makes financial decisions.

02

Work with the whole person

Connect behavioural money work with practical financial realities while distinguishing coaching from financial advice and therapy.

03

Turn awareness into change

Learn a structured Money Coaching process and practise applying it with clients, rather than stopping at concepts or conversation.

Kavita Dhamani
Why Kavita is bringing Money Coaching to India

It wasn’t a knowledge problem. Something deeper was at play.

Kavita built a thriving two-decade career in institutional investing and financial services, working with complex financial decisions in sophisticated investment environments.

And yet, for a long time, she did not feel fully in charge of her own wealth.

Looking around, she saw it everywhere. Brilliant colleagues—many of them senior investment and finance professionals—carrying the same quiet uncertainty about their personal money.

This was not a knowledge problem. Something deeper was at play.

These observations led Kavita to look beyond financial knowledge and explore what truly shapes financial decisions. She discovered Money Coaching as the missing layer between what we know about money and how we actually relate to it—the beliefs, emotions and patterns that influence our financial decisions and behaviour.

She became India’s first Certified Money Coach (CMC)® and founded The Money Coach® bringing together Money Coaching with her deep background in finance and investments. Her own coaching journey through the CMC process was deeply transformative—not only changing how she understood money, but also how she understood herself and her own relationship with it.

Kavita’s role as Director of Development & Lead Money Coach Trainer for India & Asia at The Money Coaching Institute has grown from a shared vision with Deborah Price, Founder & CEO of the Institute: to help more people transform their relationship with money—not simply by learning more about money, but by understanding the beliefs, emotions and patterns that shape their financial actions.

Through this role, Kavita is bringing the Certified Money Coach (CMC)® pathway to India, with a broader vision of building a growing community of CMCs who can help people create lasting change in their relationship with money—and extend the impact of this work far beyond what any one practitioner could reach alone.

Kavita’s vision

To create a world where people feel confident and empowered in their relationship with money.

My role as Director of Development & Lead Money Coach Trainer for India & Asia at The Money Coaching Institute sits alongside and amplifies my work as Founder of The Money Coach®—together forming one integrated vision:

A world where more people, more women and more families have the freedom to truly choose their lives, with money serving as the vehicle rather than the barrier.

If this vision speaks to you, and becoming a Certified Money Coach® feels like your calling, I would love to connect. Reach out to explore the CMC® certification programme and discover how you can bring this work to the people you serve.

Warmly,

Money issues are seldom just practical.

Our money patterns and behaviours are often shaped by deeply held beliefs, emotions and experiences—many of which are deeply early in life and operate outside our conscious awareness. This means that even when people have the knowledge and resources to make different choices, they may still find themselves repeating patterns that stand in the way of their financial goals, hopes and aspirations.

Money Coaching helps bring these hidden dynamics into awareness, creating the possibility for meaningful and lasting change. It is powerful work—and it requires the right knowledge, skills and coaching approach.

For over 26 years, The Money Coaching Institute has been developing and teaching this approach. More than 2,500 Certified Money Coaches (CMC)® across 42 countries have been trained in this methodology, creating a growing global community of practitioners bringing deeper money conversations to their work and the lives of the people they serve.

When Financial Knowledge Isn’t Enough

Money Coaching can offer a powerful new dimension to the work of financial professionals—helping them explore the behavioural and emotional patterns that can sit beneath financial decisions.

“However, after 15 years in the industry, I realized that financial knowledge alone cannot overcome limiting mindsets and ingrained behavioral patterns. People often solicit better money risk aversion and reckless risk-taking. As a CFP I couldn’t help these people make their financial plans a reality.”
— CMC® applicant, personal finance professional | Anonymised
“This experience taught me that financial freedom is not about numbers—it is about our emotional relationship with money. I am applying for this scholarship to move beyond spreadsheets and become a coach who helps resolve the behavioral and emotional issues behind financial distress.”
— CMC® applicant, personal finance professional | Anonymised

For professionals who already help people with money, CMC® offers an opportunity to develop the skills to work with what lies beneath the numbers—bringing behavioural insight, empathy and deeper money conversations into their practice.

Conversations About Money

A conversation with Kavita Dhamani

What happens when someone who has spent two decades in finance discovers that understanding money and truly feeling in charge of it are two very different things?

In this episode of Conversations About Money, Deborah Price, Founder & CEO of The Money Coaching Institute, sits down with Kavita Dhamani, Master Coach Trainer in India, to explore Kavita’s journey from financial services to Money Coaching—and the deeper understanding of money that changed the way she saw both her work and herself.

Together, they explore the human side of money: the beliefs, emotions and patterns that shape our financial lives, why financial knowledge alone doesn't always create change, and what becomes possible when we begin to understand our relationship with money at a deeper level.

The conversation also offers a glimpse into the vision behind bringing Money Coaching and the Certified Money Coach® pathway to India, and the opportunity to build a growing community of practitioners who can bring these deeper money conversations into their own work.

Understanding Money Types

A way to notice patterns — not a label for who you are.

The Money Types are based on the concept of psychological archetypes. In the Money Coaching framework, they are symbolic metaphors that help us understand patterns and behaviours that may operate outside our conscious awareness.

Your Money Type is not your personality or “who you are.” It is a lens that can show us where we are, help bring unconscious behaviours into awareness and point towards where growth may be needed. The framework includes eight Money Types: Innocent, Victim, Warrior, Martyr, Fool, Creator/Artist, Tyrant and Magician.

The Eight Money Types

Eight patterns. Eight different starting points for awareness.

These short descriptions are intentionally introductory. The full framework explores each archetype in greater depth.

The Innocent

Often avoids or feels overwhelmed by money matters, trusting others heavily and finding financial information difficult to navigate.

The Victim

May live through past money experiences and explain present financial difficulties primarily through external circumstances, often looking for rescue.

The Warrior

Focused, decisive and self-directed, often comfortable taking charge of financial decisions and competing in the money world.

The Martyr

Tends to put others' needs before their own, giving or rescuing repeatedly while carrying expectations about what others should give back.

The Fool

Adventurous and optimistic, willing to take chances and enjoy the moment, but potentially inattentive to details and consequences.

Creator/Artist

May feel tension between the material and inner/creative worlds, sometimes holding beliefs about money or materialism that limit financial expression.

The Tyrant

Uses money as a route to control, power or security and may struggle with a persistent sense that what is gained is still not enough.

The Magician

The framework's ideal Money Type: conscious of personal history and patterns, able to integrate inner awareness with action and create a more intentional relationship with money.

A place in the broader financial ecosystem

Money Coaching Has a Place in the Broader Financial Ecosystem

A submission to the Australian Government’s Quality of Advice Review

In 2022, a group of financial and behavioural money coaches made a submission to the Australian Government Treasury’s Quality of Advice Review, bringing the perspective of practitioners who understood both the financial services and the behavioural side of money.

Their central proposition was that financial wellbeing cannot always be addressed through financial knowledge or traditional financial advice. The submission explored how Money Coaching can address the beliefs, behaviours and emotional patterns that influence how people actually engage with money—and how it can complement, rather than compete with, traditional financial advice.

It also proposed a broader view of financial capability—one that includes not only knowledge and skills, but confidence, attitudes and behaviours—and positioned Money Coaching as a potential “pre-advice” service that can help people become more prepared to engage with financial advice.

A perspective from the financial advice profession

The submission includes a perspective from Michael Williams, Managing Director of The Hopkins Group, a multidisciplinary professional services firm with financial planning at its core. His letter describes how the firm incorporated Money Coaching and financial literacy into its pre-advice process, reporting that clients arrived better prepared to participate in financial planning—with greater financial understanding, clearer goals and a better grasp of their cash flows.

“A client who has undergone financial education and money coaching is better prepared and more capable of ensuring they receive the ‘quality of advice they rightfully deserve.’”

— Michael Williams, Managing Director & Authorised Representative, The Hopkins Group

Frequently asked questions

Everything you may want to know before applying.

What is Money Coaching, and how is it different from financial planning or advice?

Money Coaching focuses on the human relationship with money — emotions, beliefs, experiences, behaviours and often unconscious patterns that influence how people earn, spend, save, invest, give, receive and make financial decisions. It does not focus on recommending financial products, investments or financial strategies. The CMC® programme teaches a specialised Money Coaching Core Process Methodology for working with these behavioural and emotional dynamics.

Is the CMC® programme also a personal journey?

Yes. The programme is both professional training and a personal journey. Becoming an effective Money Coach involves learning the methodology and developing the capacity to be present with clients around emotionally charged money issues. Participants also turn the lens inward to understand and work on their own money patterns.

How much time does the training take?

Module One takes about 8–10 hours total and can typically be completed in one to two weeks. Module Two involves weekly coaching sessions and homework over roughly four weeks. Module Three involves online learning, practice-client work and live sessions; it takes roughly a 14-week segment, with the exact workload varying as practice clients progress.

What is the methodology based on?

The programme draws upon neuroscience, neuroeconomics, psychology and behaviour-change models. It is also highly applied: participants learn the proprietary Money Coaching Core Process Methodology and practise conducting the process with clients.

Where and how is the training delivered?

All portions of the training are online. The inaugural India cohort is co-taught by Kavita Dhamani and Deborah Price. The first cohort's scheduling accommodates the U.S./San Francisco time zone so Deborah can co-teach from San Francisco, with adjustments as the programme progresses.

Who generally participates?

CMC cohorts are diverse, with strong representation from financial services, coaching and counselling professions. People from other professional backgrounds are welcome because Money Coaching can complement many existing areas of expertise. You do not need to be a financial professional to become a Money Coach.

Do I need prior coaching experience or a specific qualification?

No. No prior coaching experience or specific qualification is required. A financial-services background can be helpful, but it is not required.

What are the fees?

The inaugural India cohort is priced at US$1,500 with peer coaching for the Core Money Coaching Process. A private-coaching option with MCI staff is US$2,000. There are no other programme costs.

What happens after the cohort?

The Institute's intention is to build an ongoing Money Coaching community in India, with opportunities for connection, learning and collaboration. The wider Institute also offers business-development learning, continuing education, advanced trainings and optional individual coaching at additional fees.

What should I expect to be able to do by the end?

The stated intention is to develop a deeper understanding of money, the brain and the emotional/behavioural dynamics of money; understand the proprietary Core Process Methodology; be able to conduct it with clients; gain practical experience with practice clients; and have a foundation from which to continue developing as a Money Coach.

Is this a financial education or investment programme?

No. CMC® training does not involve financial education about products or investment management. The focus is a specialised coaching methodology centred on the human relationship with money.

What support is available during the training?

The training includes the Core Process experience, instructor-led learning, practice-client work, case reviews and coaching support built into the programme. The exact schedule and support structure for each cohort is confirmed during onboarding.
